Doctor Lindsey Page Winterbotham (1887-1960) sent out invitations to people who would be interested forming an anthropological society. An inaugural meeting was held in September 1948 and Professor Wilkinson accepted the position of president. The objectives of the Society set out in the constitution relate to the promotion of the "study of anthropology in all its branches". It was proposed that four ordinary meetings be held per annum. The first society newsletter appeared in October 1967. This collection also contains papers and correspondence belonging to Doctor Winterbotham who was the Honourary Curator of the Anthropology Museum at the University of Queensland between 1948 and 1960. It was Winterbotham's own collection which he donated to the University in 1948 which saw the commencement of the museum's collection. Dr Winterbotham was also president of the ASQ between 1954 and 1955.
