This series consists of photographs, colour slides, and photograph albums belonging to Margaret Lawrie and feature life in the Torres Strait. The material includes black-and-white as well as colour photographs, and slides and show views of many of the different Islands, school children, teachers, ceremonies and dignitaries.

Little girls note that mother crushes the leaves of this plant and squeezes juice from them onto infected sores.
I saw girls of 8 years and upward weave garlands from these flowers in the manner indicated in sketch at L [left]. Finger movements were deft.
The children pinch the base of the flower between thumb and forefinger - the flower then pops off and shoots away for a distance of several feet.

Motion pictures filmed by Margaret Lawrie mostly through the 1980s. The series includes not only the original colour super 8mm film, but also dvd copies and at least 2 vhs format.
Note: It is common practice in the Torres Strait Islands that when string games [wami] are performed they are usually accompanied by stories and may be accompanied with a song and a specially choreographed dance. These are ways in which stories are handed down depicting everyday life, important events etc. The Margaret Lawrie Collection has examples also of these in sketches.
