Hertzberg married Miriam (Minnie) Cohen on 21 June 1886 at Ulmarra, NSW. Following the wedding the couple moved permanently to Brisbane. They had 3 children.
Hertzberg contributed greatly to the public life of Brisbane, giving his services in the following positions: government representative on the General Hospital Board from 1902; President of the Chamber of Commerce for 3 terms, member of the Water and Sewerage board from 1905; one of the first senators of the University of Queensland; foundation member of the Rhodes Scholarship Committee; President for over 16 years of the Brisbane Hebrew Congregation; and Grand Master of the Grand Masonic Lodge of Queensland for many years.
